Oh christ, Someone is freeloading on the net!
As per this Arstechnica article: AT&T chief says that people are only paying for half the Internet
“We have to figure out who pays for this bigger and bigger IP network,” said Mr Whitacre, who was in New York ahead of AT&T’s annual presentation to investors and analysts on Tuesday. “We have to show a return on our investments.”
Ok, so tell me who is freeloading off of my internet fees? I pay for my net access. Google pays fot it’s net access to I can do searches. Microsoft pays for net access so people can do MSN and technet. Anyone with a web server has to pay for net access. My webhost pays SOMEONE for net access, I mean christ. Can anyone tell me who is freeloading? If someone runs out of bandwidth, they can just buy more from their provider, or figure out where all the bandwidth is going.
I know this basically comes down to the issue of tiered internet access. Which I belive is totally negated by the fact that, if I pay for x bandwidth I should get that much. It is a common fact that ISPs oversubscribe their uplinks, but if they max out, they purchase more bandwidth. Otherwise they face the wrath of their customer base. If a business needs to employ VoIP or video, they can purchase a leased line. Which is a dedicated line which one else has access to.
But this isn’t about tiered internet either. They want to charge you TWICE for internet use. Once for access to the internet, and once for the content you are requesting. Maybe they will charge you five cents per email, or a penny per web page viewed. And this is on top of the fees that you are paying to the content provider, if you pay anything at all.
