Atheism, a collection of quotes

Someone recently on Arstechnica posted a series of quotes regarding Atheism that I decided to reproduce here. (i.e. I stole your quotes fuzz!)
“Religion is sometimes a source of happiness, and I would not deprive anyone of happiness. But it is a comfort appropriate for the weak, not for the strong. The great trouble with religion, any religion, is that a religionist, having accepted certain propositions by faith, cannot therefore judge those propositions by evidence. One may bask at the warm fire of faith or choose to live in the bleak uncertainty of reason, but one cannot have both.”
- Robert Heinlein

“The truth is that Christian theology, like every other theology, is not only opposed to the scientific spirit; it is also opposed to all other attempts at rational thinking. Not by accident does Genesis 3 make the father of knowledge a serpent — slimy, sneaking and abominable. Since the earliest days the church as an organization has thrown itself violently against every effort to liberate the body and mind of man. It has been, at all times and everywhere, the habitual and incorrigible defender of bad governments, bad laws, bad social theories, bad institutions. It was, for centuries, an apologist for slavery, as it was the apologist for the divine right of kings.”
-H. L. Mencken

“I don’t accept the currently fashionable assertion that any view is automatically as worthy of respect as any equal and opposite view. My view is that the moon is made of rock. If someone says to me Well, you haven’t been there, have you? You haven’t seen it for yourself, so my view that it is made of Norwegian Beaver Cheese is equally valid – then I cant even be bothered to argue. There is such a thing as the burden of proof, and in the case of god, as in the case of the composition of the moon, this has shifted radically. God used to be the best explanation we’d got, and we’ve now got vastly better ones. God is no longer an explanation of anything, but has instead become something that would itself need an insurmountable amount of explaining. So I don’t think that being convinced that there is no god is as irrational or arrogant a point of view as belief that there is. I don’t think the matter calls for even-handedness at all.”
-Douglas Adams

“A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.”
-Albert Einstein

“I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any Church that I know of. My own mind is my own Church.”
-Thomas Paine

And finally, the pièce de résistance:

“I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”
-Stephen F Roberts

Tokyo Godfathers

Last night I finally got the time to watch Tokyo Godfathers. I had the dvd for about a week so far from netflix and I just have not had time to watch it. I really really liked it. It is a tale about three homeless people who come across an infant that someone abandoned. Of course they spend some time arguing about what to do with the poor child. Eventually it leads all three of them on a trip around the city, on Christmas eve night where each shall learn why they are hiding from their past.

It is a great movie that gets off to a slow start, but about midway through, you cannot pull yourself away from it. Each of the characters are unique and endearing, which compels you to empathize with them.

Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii the only console that I am excited about this generation. Specifcally because they are trying something different to enhance the fun factor of games. Hopfully it will all turn out for the best. I will be buying one on Nov 19th with games that is for sure. Tasty goodness all around.

I mean the PS3 and the Xbox360 are also interesting, but they do not offer anything new and different. Graphics only take you so far in games, that is until we end up with freaking holodecks in our homes ala Star Trek.

The Wii will kick ass.

I got my Speakers!

Well I finally got my Axiom speakers in. And man are they Beautiful! Only took three days to go from Canada, all the Way to Alaska!
The Boxes are freaking Huuuge:

Here is the center channel, the VP100 very smooth sounding and very shiny:

The M50 Towers arrived double boxed with no marks at all on them:

Here is a pic of the hardware they came with. You can choose to use the rubber feet if you are on wood floors, or the metal spikes if you are on carpet. Since I am on carpet I decided to go with the spikes, and you can hear the spikes pop through the carpet when you set them down:

And then the actual M50 itself. As you can tell very very shiny and boy do they sound nice:

And then here is all three speakers with the new tv. We are totally digging the new speakers with the tv. I don’t think I have ever seen so many movies in 72 hours. Very enjoyable.

Is the Planet Ars Lounge stuck?

Planet Ars Lounge seems to be stuck. The last post it has on the site is back on the 3rd, and knowing Arsians it should be full of topics from today already. I wonder what is up…

Permament Fund Dividend Time!

It is PFD time in Alaska, so like most Alaskans I have stuck with tradition and ordered some new toys to play with.

I have just received my first HDTV in the mail two days ago. It is the Westinghouse LVM-42w2. It is a true 1080p set with tons of inputs. I am very very excited about this. I was waiting for a good 1080p set to come down in price, and Crutchfield had a good price on it. The picture quality is crazy high. I only have access to DVD content at the moment, but it still makes movies come alive. I did try plugging my PC into it today and it works fantastic as a Monitor! It has a higher resolution than my 20″ Dell 2005 does. (The Westinghouse native res is 1920×1080) For an example of how good the screen is, check this image out. (no nudity, but possibly not work safe) She is practically life size according to the calculations of an Arsian.

I also placed an order for a set of three speakers from Axiom Audio. More specifcally two M50 towers and a VP100 center channel in High Gloss Cherry. They have a great online community and some awesome reviews. They are based out of Canada, but they offer free shipping even to Alaska! Which is amazing since it is 137 lbs of speakers and packing material that will be enroute. They should get here within the next day or two. The anticipation is killing me!

Netflix opened up a distribution center in Anchorage Alaska

And it freaking rocks. The turnaround time is down to what most people in the Lower 48 get, 1-2 Days turnaround time. Very Very nice. I have around 40 movies in my queue currently, some experimental, others my stardard fare. Netflix makes it easy to explore genres you never would normally try out at the local store. (My current test is Love Hina, recommened by Netflix so we will see how that goes.)
